Decent work and welfare for GIMPA staff

GIMPA’s Employee Conditions of Service and Scheme of Service set the regulatory framework for fair working conditions across academic, administrative and professional staff. Academic appointments run for terms of up to six years, renewable on performance, with retirement at 60 and post-retirement contracts available to senior academics. The Institute has 497 employees across its Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Takoradi campuses.

The academic calendar alternates intensive teaching with short breaks for research, writing, community service and rest. Staff have annual, casual, emergency, compassionate, paternity and sick leave, and eligible female staff can extend the statutory three months of maternity leave to six months.

All eligible staff are covered by life insurance and by Workman’s Compensation for work-related injury or illness. The Staff Medical Support Policy provides an on-campus clinic as the first point of call for staff and their dependants, with support towards approved medical bills. Under the Conditions of Service the Institute also contributes to staff dependants’ funerals and weddings, including transport and refreshments so that colleagues can attend.

A dedicated Safety Officer is responsible for staff safety and workplace well-being, and tools and protective gear are provided for technical and physical roles. In January 2026 a two-day Leadership and Health Resilience Seminar brought together staff, management, health-sector stakeholders, alumni and students, and the Outstanding Teacher Summit 2025 championed teacher leadership, innovation and well-being.

Recruitment is merit-based, with structured interviews, standardised assessment instruments and a 70 per cent pass mark for faculty appointments. A KPI-based appraisal system sets individual goals, provides regular supervisor feedback, involves staff in their own assessment and links performance to development and recognition. The Human Resource Policy Manual sets out a written grievance procedure and disciplinary processes for all staff.

GIMPA has a Gender Policy and Centre, and its 2023–2027 Strategic Priorities commit the Institute to attract and retain talent, foster dignity, respect and equity and promote gender inclusivity. Women make up 28.3 per cent of the workforce, a gap the Institute is working to close through targeted recruitment, retention and advancement, supported by the GIMPA Ladies Network. The Institute appointed its first female Registrar Secretary in 2022.

Retiring staff are honoured at a Valedictory Service with citations and the Institute’s contribution to their Provident Fund; in September 2023 nine retirees were celebrated. Long Service Awards recognise sustained contribution.
