Quality education depends on the physical environment as much as on curriculum and faculty. The Directorate carries out routine and responsive maintenance of lecture halls, classrooms, offices and residential facilities, including the painting and refurbishment of lecture halls at the Syndicate Block, GB Block and Law School Annex, and electrical, plumbing, carpentry and masonry repairs.
It prepares venues and provides logistics for lectures and examinations, orientation, conferences, executive education, graduation and matriculation, public lectures and workshops, and maintains water and sanitation facilities across the Institute. During interruptions to the public water supply it has coordinated emergency arrangements to protect students, staff and programme participants.
The Directorate supports safe workplaces by identifying and remedying physical hazards, inspecting facilities, maintaining fire and emergency preparedness and supporting occupational health and safety training for personnel such as security coordinators and plumbers. Its projects engage painters, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, masons, casual workers and cleaning and security service providers, so that infrastructure spending supports livelihoods in the wider community.
Facility needs are identified, prioritised, estimated, approved, procured, supervised and documented within institutional procedures, creating an audit trail for every intervention. The Directorate supports compliance with building, fire, environmental, sanitation and occupational safety requirements, and works with the Rectorate, Registrar’s Office, Finance, Procurement, HR, the Schools, ICT, Security, the Clinic and Hospitality Services, and with external engineers, contractors, utility and sanitation providers.
