GIMPA Law School: justice, rights and public interest law

The GIMPA Law School’s public interest work includes an access-to-justice MoU on prison reform and pretrial detention, the African Journal of International Criminal Justice, the 2025 Law Conference on Climate Justice, a conference on galamsey and the environment, and the Christof Heyns All-African Human Rights Moot Court, which the school won in 2026.

Established in 2010, GIMPA Law School offers the LL.B in day and evening streams, a general LL.M and specialist LL.M programmes in International Trade and Business Law, International Criminal Law and Justice, and Dispute Resolution Law and Practice. Internships and externships with the Superior Courts, law firms, corporate legal departments and the Council for Law Reporting connect the classroom to professional institutions.

In 2026 the School launched the GIMPA Pre-Bar Course, which combines Company Law, Commercial Law, alternative dispute resolution, Family Law and Interpretation with practical labs, legal writing, professional readiness and an IT Law and Practice Clinic.

The School’s cooperation with the International Criminal Court, first signed in 2019 and renewed in December 2024 for five years, supports the LL.M in International Criminal Law and Justice through internships, visiting professionals, seminars and research, anchored by the African Centre of International Criminal Justice. An access-to-justice framework with the Dominican Republic’s ONAPREP and Fordham University’s Leitner Center, signed in October 2025, provides for joint research, training of officials and technical assistance on prison reform.

Partnerships with the University of Connecticut School of Law, under which four GIMPA students completed LL.M degrees in May 2026, and Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, which visited in September 2024, extend academic mobility. Students compete in moot court competitions, among them the Christof Heyns All-African Human Rights Moot, which GIMPA won in 2026.

Teaching and research span constitutional and human rights law, international criminal justice, trade and business law, dispute resolution, climate law and technology law, including cybersecurity, data protection and AI governance. In 2025 the School produced the Institute’s first LL.M valedictorian, with a GPA of 3.98.
